About Me:

Began teaching in 2006. Taught 2nd grade for 2 years and last year taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade math EIP. I will be teaching 3rd grade next year. I recently graduated with my masters in Reading Education.

A Positive Experience with Instructional Technology:

I love to make movies with my students out of everything from the stories they write to scavenger hunts to sharing real-life examples of concepts we're learning. My favorite movie we made last year was a combination of all of those. The students wrote stories about a day at school making sure to include all of the fractions they encounter during that day. They then made the stories into movies which incorporated the use of digital cameras, flip cameras, PowerPoint, Movie Maker, and a Green Screen. The students loved it and the movies turned out really good. However, this was my first experience with the green screen, so I was a little disappointed with the quality of those transitions. I'm planning on doing more movies with the Green Screen next school year and this time I am going to have a true cloth back drop instead of just bulletin board paper taped to the wall. I'm hoping this will clear up the quality.

My Teach 21 Project

Our project is the LEAF project.  This acronym stands for Lowndes' Environmentally Active Friends.  Ms. Cates' Advanced Journalism students will be mentoring my 3rd grade EIP class.  The high school students will be teaching them broadcast fundamentals at the beginning of the year while getting to know them.  The third graders will begin a broadcast at Dewar Elementary.  Then after Christmas break we will begin a global project to begin a recycling effort at Dewar.  The high school and elementary students will collaborate to make videos addressing recycling needs and methods (they pick what they want to address) which we will broadcast and podcast (we hope!), so other schools can learn as well.

3rd Grade GPS Standards addressed through our Recycling Project:

S3L2. Students will recognize the effects of pollution and humans on the environment.

              a. Explain the effects of pollution (such as littering) to the habitats of plants and animals.

b. Identify ways to protect the environment.

               c. Conservation of resources

               d. Recycling of materials

ELA3W1    The student demonstrates competency in the writing process. The student

c. Writes text of a length appropriate to address the topic or tell the story.

d. Uses organizational patterns for conveying information (e.g., chronological order, cause and effect, similarity and difference, questions and answers).
e. Begins to use appropriate structures to ensure coherence (e.g., transition words and phrases, bullets, subheadings, numbering).
f. Begins to use specific sensory details (e.g., strong verbs, adjectives) to enhance descriptive effect.
i. Begins to include relevant examples, facts, anecdotes, and details appropriate to the audience.

j. Uses a variety of resources to research and share information on a topic.

l. Writes a persuasive piece that states a clear position.

m. Pre-writes to generate ideas, develops a rough draft, rereads to revise, and edits to correct.

n. Publishes by presenting an edited piece of writing to others.

Students will be addresing the higher order thinking skills of creating and evaluating when they decide on a need to address and create a story to broadcast on air.
