About Me:

I am entering my 12th year of teaching.  I taught third grade for 9 years, one year in Kindergarten, and this coming year will be my 2nd year in fourth grade.  I have a master's degree in IT from VSU and a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction from NOVA.

A Positive Experience with Instructional Technology:

I took a class on Scratch last year at VSU and taught it to the technology club at my school.  The students picked it up really fast and I was able to be there as a facilitator while they created many different projects.  The students were able to delve into the program and teach me some new things within the program.  I hope to teach it again during the technology club and go more in-depth with it.  I would like students to produce a project from a given set of guidelines that will incorporate computering programming, sequence, collaboration, and following directions.

Interests:

My Teach 21 Project

Project Summary

My project is titled “Can you dig it” and refers to finding hidden geo-caches using GPS receivers and GPS-based activities.  With technology a vital and growing part of daily living in the 21st century, it is my responsibility to meet the challenge of using technology effectively in the classroom.  To do this, I will be utilizing Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receivers along with GPS-based activities.  Using these tools and activities will allow me the opportunities to instill in my students a curiosity about geography, science, mathematics and the world in which they live.  The students will learn about satellites and how they work.  They will learn about waypoints and tracks (breadcrumbs that GPS receivers leave behind) and the information that is recorded on the GPS.

Standards

The following standards will be covered during this project.  Additional standards will be addressed as activities are created and carried out during the school year.

Science:

S4CS3 Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities utilizing safe laboratory procedures.

a.   Use computers, cameras and recording devices for capturing information.

S4CS5 Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.

a. Write instructions that others can follow in carrying out a scientific procedure.

b. Make sketches to aid in explaining scientific procedures or ideas.

c. Use numerical data in describing and comparing objects and events.

Social Studies Skill Matrix:

MAP AND GLOBE SKILLS:

·         Using latitude and longitude to determine location

·         Draw conclusions and make generalizations based on information from maps

Math Standards:

M4P1. Students will solve problems (using appropriate technology).

a. Build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving.

b. Solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts.

d. Monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving.

M4P3. Students will communicate mathematically.

a. Organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication.

b. Communicate their mathematical thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others.

c. Analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others.

d. Use the language of mathematics to express mathematical ideas precisely.

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)

·         Analysis- Using the GPS receivers, the students will interpret the data given to locate clues to solve logical thinking puzzles.

·         Synthesis- By the 3rd nine weeks, I hope students can work in cooperative groups to plan and prepare a

scavenger hunt for other students to complete.

·         Evaluation- Throughout the year, students will need to revise and evaluate their method of utilizing the GPS receivers.  (What worked versus what didn’t work?)

ISTE-NETS

·         Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

b.   engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources

·         Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

a.   design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity

·         Model Digital-Age Work and Learning

b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation

d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools    to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning

Products

·         Wiki Use

·         Podcasts- explaining how the GPS receivers work and how to them

·         Use of GPS

·         Designing a scavenger hunt for other students
