About Me:

I am beginning my 12th year teaching first grade.  I have a bachelors degree in elementary education from Auburn University and a masters degree in early childhood education.  I have a 9 month old son Matthew and a 4 year old daughter named Lillie who will be starting "big school" this year at Westside in Pre-K!

A Positive Experience with Instructional Technology:

I have thoroughly enjoyed having a Smartboard in my classroom this year and can't wait to learn more ways to bring the curriculum to life for my students.  I think the most exciting thing for me as a teacher is to see children, who otherwise wouldn't attempt to answer a question or contribute to a discussion,  literally bouncing in their seat waiting for a turn to come up to the Smartboard for their turn to "play"!

Interests:

  • spending time with family
  • relaxing at the pool
  • shopping

My Teach 21 Project

PROJECT SUMMARY:  Because one of the focus areas in our WES School Improvement Plan is Vocabulary, I have chosen to create a project centered on this subject in conjunction with our new “Amazing Words” from Reading Street as well as the story vocabulary from Text Talk.  Please keep in mind that I teach 1st grade, which means my little babies have to start at a very basic level and we’ll move up from there.

For this project, each child will be assigned a vocabulary word throughout the year as we study appropriate words in class either with Text Talk or as an “Amazing Word” in Reading Street.  After a lesson on how to use a digital camera, each child will have the opportunity to take the digital camera home with them to involve their family.  The family will have a couple of days to find some way to “create” that word in a picture.  The child will then return the camera to school.  After a few children have taken their pictures, we will have small group lessons to teach them how to download their pictures from the digital camera onto the computer and then how to upload the pictures into a class Photo Story.  Finally, the children will add audio to their picture that tells the definition of their word and gives a little information about how their picture demonstrates their particular word vocabulary word.  Because we only do 3-5 words a week and not all words will be appropriate for this project, I will probably only have one maybe two children taking the camera home each week.   This process will be ongoing throughout most of the year.  Once the whole class has had the opportunity to add their picture and audio to our Photo Story, I will burn a copy for each child to keep.

HOTS:  This project is designed to move the children from the very basic level of simply remembering what the definition of the word is, to applying the definition to their everyday world, and then creating a scenario that uses that word in context.

ISTE:  1.) Creativity and Innovation- The students will demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge and develop an innovative product.  2.)  Technology Operations and Concepts- The students will demonstrate ability to use technology concepts, systems and operations.

GPS:  ELA1R5 The Student acquires and uses grade-level words to communicate effectively.  (a) Reads and listens to a variety of texts and uses new words in oral and written language.

MATERIALS NEEDED:  Digital Camera, Microphone, 20 cds
